Organic Boosting

How to manually boost items in organic ranking in arbitrary ways.

Promoted supports complex and overlapping allocation and boosting rules, including sponsored search and auctioned boosting.

Sometimes, you want to simply boost an item to the top wherever it can appear.

Implementation

Set boosted=1 as a key-value pair in the 'default' source for the Item CMS. This will cause the item to be boosted to the top by default with the second highest priority. By default, "exact query match" will always have the highest priority. You can configure these rules using Blender into any configuration. For example, you may want to limit boosting subject to some semantic relevancy controls, see Semantic Relevance. If you need to set this value on another source, then please inform Promoted, and we will configure the blender rule for you.

  • If there are multiple items boosted with the same priority, then the ordinary utility ranking score will choose what is shown first.
  • If you want multiple priorities for boosting, then assign higher numbers for higher priority.
  • If you only want some slots (e.g., only the first slot on the first page) to allow boosting, this can be configured in Blender on a per-slot basis. Likewise for any complex frequency capping or diversity rules. If you are adding complex boosting rules, consider using Promoted's promotion system.

Boosting rules and rule triggers are always shown in detail in the Introspection Report for debugging, understanding, and designing rules.
